Welcome to Zeitspace, Bety Rodriguez-Milla

As we continue to grow, we continue to spotlight our new team members here on the Zeitspace blog. Today we're happy to share the news that Bety Rodriguez-Milla has joined Zeitspace as a software engineer. Have a look at her answers to our introductory questions, and be on the lookout for wormholes!

Why software development?

When I finished physics grad school, I already knew I didn't want to continue the academic physics path. I toyed with the idea of becoming a software developer because I like to solve problems with a computer. But then I took a job as a scientific manager at Louisiana State University, supporting large multidisciplinary grants that involved several universities. After eight successful years, the grants came to an end, and, since I was already living in Canada, it was time for something else. I found a mentor at SharpestMinds, and I then got lucky to find the cool team at Zeitspace.

What kind of development do you like? Mobile? Web? Something else?

My background in computational physics and algorithms puts me into the backend business. I like solving the kind of problems you encounter when handling and massaging data and converting them to something that can be presented to others. I don't have much experience in frontend development yet, and I hope I'll be learning quickly from others here.

Recommend one thing (maybe a book, movie, album, TV show, physical experience…) Why?

Hmm, hard to recommend something without feeling that they may be guilty pleasures. So, I’ll recommend some non-mainstream music, in no particular order, The National, First Aid Kit, Neko Case, The Decemberists, Deer Tick, Brandi Carlile, Portugal. The Man, Spoon, Laura Gibson, Lisa Hannigan, Hamilton Leithhauser, and by now, you get the idea of the type of music I enjoy!

What’s your favourite new (or old) discovery in Waterloo Region?

Here are some of my favourite discoveries. There are lots of festivals every weekend in the Region, especially during the summer. I really like the agricultural fairs in Ontario, many of them are close to the Region. These are family-friendly events that are worth checking out. Also, there are beaches within a 1.5h drive, such as Grand Bend on Lake Huron, and Port Dover on Lake Erie, among others.

Share a cool thing that folks might like to know about you?

I once had to kick open a door… Let's just say the door lock didn't survive. I am also a gardener, but that does not sound as cool as knowing how to kick in a door.

Anything else you'd like to add that these questions miss?

Here is a web page that shows a movie of a flight through a worm hole. You might spot a resemblance with the Zeitspace logo.
